City of Calera Goes Pink for 4th Annual Event

City of Calera Launches 4th Pink Campaign

October 2014

Birmingham, AL-The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) is proud to partner with the City of Calera, Alabama for the fourth year to raise money for life-saving breast cancer research.

Beginning in mid-September and continuing during the month of October, the City of Calera will be participating in several fundraising events designed to raise dollars for breast cancer research.  Starting with the sale of a specially designed “Calera Goes Pink!” t-shirts, the City of Calera and the public schools have joined forces to set a record for the most shirts sold in the four year history of this community event. The BCRFA/City of Calera t-shirts are available to order at City Hall.

On September 19th, participating Calera retailers will be decorating their store fronts to bring awareness to the community about the importance of breast cancer research. In addition, Ricky Cairns stadium on Hwy. 25 in Calera will be decked out in pink where the Calera Eagles will be honoring local breast cancer survivors and their families at the Friday night football game.

People are encouraged to wear the “Calera Goes Pink!” shirts to the high school game and to the youth football games on September 20th. All things “pink” will be available for purchase at all games for a nominal fee that will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.

The community is also encouraged to wear the specialty shirts during “Pink Month”-October 1 through October 31, 2014.

From Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, participating Calera local businesses will be selling pink paper ribbons for $1 “in honor of” or “in memory of” friends and family affected by breast cancer.  Recognition ribbons will be posted in store front windows.  All proceeds for the pink ribbons will go to the BCRFA.

On Sunday, October 19, Timberline Golf Club will host the “Calera Goes Pink!” finale event with a golf tournament consisting of four-person teams.  Presented by the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the annual golf tournament is a great way to end Calera’s month long efforts to fund research.  Player registration is $100 per person.  A portion of the proceeds will be used to fund research through the BCRFA.  (Golfers must have a USGA handicap and be registered by October 10, 2014.)  Interested individuals and teams should contact Joe Kruse at Timberline Golf Club- 205.668.7888 or [email protected]

“In the past 3 years, the City of Calera has raised over $77,000 to support breast cancer research. I am excited and proud of our community’s involvement with this worthy cause.  We hope to increase our fundraising total this year as support from our City, local businesses and our wonderful citizens continues to grow each year. ” says Mayor Jon Graham.

Dolly O’Neal, Co-Founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama said, “The City of Calera’s leadership in bringing their community together is a model for what a grass-roots fundraising effort can do. The City of Calera shares BCRFA’s passion for keeping the money raised in Alabama to support breast cancer research and we are thrilled to see so much commitment to saving lives.”

Net proceeds from all events will help the BCRFA provide the critical seed dollars required to secure national breast cancer research grants.  All research dollars raised in Alabama will stay in Alabama at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, but the research and new treatments discovered reach women across the nation.
