Bolt for Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run Boasts a New Name, but Same Mission

Community 5K raises over $48K to raise funds and save lives

The Bolt for Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run lived up to its name and was a lightening success. Previously the Pink Up the Pace 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, this year the event had a different name, but the same goal – raising funds for breast cancer research and savings lives. The Bolt for Breast Cancer, organized by the Junior Board of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) and presented by ABC 33/40, took place at Crestline Field on Sunday, October 27, and raised a whopping $48,287 with 565 participants of the 5K and 1-mile Dolly Dash.

Tate Milstead finished first in the men’s 5K, and Abbie Clark came in first place for the women. Full race results are available here.

“The $48,287 that was raised will make a powerful impact throughout Alabama,” said Erica Mitchell, Junior Board member and Event Chair. “This money will enable groundbreaking breast cancer research to occur, leading to new information, improving quality of life for patients, and hope for future generations faced with a breast cancer diagnosis.”

The electric energy didn’t stop after participants bolted across the finish line. Daniel Logsdon performed live music, and participants enjoyed face painting, an inflatable obstacle course, and a bounce house. Refreshments were generously provided by Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Co, Craft’s Cahaba Brewing Co, and brick + tin.

All proceeds stay in the state of Alabama, but they are invested in breast cancer research that diagnoses, treats, and prevents the disease worldwide. Since the event’s inception in 2018, $208,411 has been raised to support the BCRFA’s mission to find a cure for breast cancer and eradicate the disease.
